It was a cold and rainy day... So I hopped on Pinterest and found two awesome ideas...and put them together! I originally found the homemade kids play oven and thought "Wow! My kids would love to make that!" I later found a Pin with the idea of turning baking sheets into magnet boards. My mind wandered with ideas and possibilities. I finally came to this. I'd make the kids oven, and turn the baking sheet into the front of a mini fridge! So here's how I did it: First, I dug through my collection of boxes in the basement. I found one that would make a perfect oven! I taped the top flaps together. Then I cut out the oven door. I wrapped the front and top of the box with wax paper and taped the ends to hold it in place (you can skip the wax paper or use a different paper, I just used it to cover up all the words on the box). Last, I used a giant Sharpie marker to draw on knobs, a handle, and burners. Tada! The oven is complete! Now on to the mini fridge... The only other box I had that would work was too weak for the door I was about to add. If you make this, make sure you use a strong sturdy box with strong sturdy flaps. The box I ended up using was actually perfect because it was exactly the same size as the baking sheet! Now on to how we made this... After finding our box, we cut off all the top flaps except for one long flap. I covered one side of the baking sheet with wax paper, then taped the baking sheet securely to the long flap. Your mini fridge door should now be able to swing open and shut. Next, I rolled up some extra wax paper, stuck a piece of rolled tape to one end of it, and taped the other end to the door. Now you can keep the door closed by pressing the end of wax paper with the rolled tape to the side of the mini fridge. We again used the giant Sharpie to make it look like a real fridge with doors and handles. Now the mini fridge is ready to plug in and get cold! (pretend, of course!) Time to accessorize! I went through the cupboards and found some old utensils, bowls, measuring cup, and a pan for them to use with their new oven. Olivia is already cooking me some pancakes! To finish off the mini fridge, find some magnets (we used alphabet magnets) and stick them on the front of the fridge! (The baking sheet is metal...magnets will stick to it...awesome!!!) Now if we just had some pretend food! Oh the possibilities!!!
Rainy day? No need to make your kids sit inside all day bored out of their minds. All you need to do is pop in one of these classic movies, and they'll be singing and dancing while learning basic fundamentals like cognitive, physical, social development, and musical skills. In no time your kids will be jumping up to sing and dance along with all their favorite classic songs. Many of you have probably heard of these movies, and if you haven't, you MUST buy one! They are all part of the Wee Sing Collection. Here is a list of their DVD's: -Wee Sing in Sillyville -Wee Sing Train -Wee Sing King Cole's Party -Wee Sing Under the Sea -Wee Sing The Best Christmas Ever -Wee Sing Together -Wee Sing Grandpa's Magical Toys -Wee Sing The Big Rock Candy Mountains -Wee Sing in the Marvelous Musical Mansion "Kids will love to sing along and dance along with comical characters that lead them on a musical adventure in a magical land." - Quoted from the Wee Sing Website. My kids' favorites are Sillyville, The Big Rock Candy Mountains, and The Marvelous Musical Mansion. I grew up watching these movies, and I'm so happy they're still around for my girls to enjoy! They always have all the classic favorite childrens' songs like "John Jacon Jingle Heimer Schmidt", "Do Your Ears Hang Low", "She'll be Coming 'Round the Mountain", "Hickory Dickory Dock", and many many more! The songs are much more fun to sing while dancing along with the characters. They teach a bunch of new dances, lessons on sharing and caring, and how to be a good friend. These movies guarantee clean, wholesome family fun! Wee Sing also has books and cd's. I bought a few of the cassette tapes for my girls to play in their little karaoke tape player. Check out their website, www.weesing,com, to see all the different movies, books, and cd's to choose from.
Now that you know about Wee Sing, buy a few movies, and get your kids moving and having fun, no matter the weather! If you are looking for something fun to do with the family, here is your answer! Geocaching! I will tell you as much as I can in this blog about the world of geocaching, but the best way to learn is by experiencing it yourself! So here goes... Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunt game using GPS devices and hints. Geocachers navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and attempt to find the geocache hidden at that location. Sound confusing? It's really simple once you get the hang of it. But wait, there's more! To play the game, you must follow these steps: 1. Register at www.geocaching.com (this is the site with all the coordinates). 2. Visit the "Hide & Seek a Cache" page. 3. Enter your zip code and click "search." 3. Choose any geocache from the list and click on its name (you can pick by difficulty, terrain, or distance). 4. Enter the coordinates of the geocache into your GPS Device (Locus Free is an Android App that works pretty good if you don't have a real GPS). 5. Use your GPS device to assist you in finding the hidden geocache (along with any hints given on the website). 6. Find the geocache, sign the logbook, and return the geocache to its original location! There are a few rules:
Geocaches can be found all over the world! Most geocachers hide caches in places that are important to them. These locations can vary. They may be at your local park, a hiking trail up the side of a mountain, underwater, or on a busy city street. Your first geocache should be easy. When looking for your first geocache online, you should make sure it has all these criteria: cache type- traditional, difficulty rating- 1, cache size- regular or large, and you should also check to see that other geocachers have recently logged finds on the cache. This indicates that the geocache is most likely still in place and findable. There are over a dozen different types of geocaches. To read more about those, click here. Geocaches vary in size and appearance. You will see everything from large, clear plastic containers to film canisters! Small, Regular and Large containers usually hold trade items. A geocache always contains a logsheet for you to log your find. Larger caches may contain a logbook and trade items. These items turn the adventure into a true treasure hunt. You never know what the cache owner or visitors to the cache may have left. Remember, if you take something, leave something of equal or greater value in return. It is recommended that items in a cache be individually packaged in a clear, zipped plastic bag to protect them from the elements. You may also find a Trackable, a geocaching piece that you can learn more about here. Well, that about sums up the basics of geocaching! There is a LOT more to learn on the geocaching website. My entire family enjoys this activity, and I am making it more popular among my friends and extended family. I hope you enjoy your first geocaching adventure, and remember to take along snacks, sunscreen, water, your GPS-enabled device, trading items, comfy shoes, and a camera! You won't want to miss the scenery and history surrounding you! *Information gathered from www.geocaching.com Do your kids have more toys than you know what to do with? Are you using your living room and extra bedrooms as toy storage? Well, pack them up and put them back in the kids room! "Where will I put the toys?", you might ask. The answer is simple. Ditch the dressers! Open up extra space in your kids' room by getting rid of their dressers! "But where will they put their clothes?", you might wonder. Hide them in the closet! Many retail stores sell these nifty and colorful 3-drawer wide carts. They safely fit a large amount of clothes, the drawers are deep and durable, and your kids will LOVE the different colors! Best of all, they are under $20! Simply pick out the color you like, hide it in the closet, insert the clothes that can not hang, and the cart is short enough to still hang clothes above it! Their clothes are out of the way, and the toys are in their room to play! They are small enough to fit in almost any closet, but big enough to hold even my daughters' large amount of clothes. I put two of these side-by-side in my daughters' closet. They picked out pink and blue. They each have their own, and they set their shoes and accessories on the top. Their dresses and blouses hang above the carts. We did this to make room for their doll houses and bookshelves. Great solution to a common problem!
I thought having two girls three years apart would be a piece of cake! I mean, no buying all new clothes, they can share a room, they can share dolls and toys, putting them both in the bath tub saves on time, they behave better than boys, and they are more fun to shop with...
WRONG! The image I had in my mind when I heard the words "it's another girl" was completely different than it actually turned out to be! They are complete opposites of each other. One likes pink, the other likes purple. One likes fruit, the other likes veggies. One like dresses, the other likes pants. One likes princesses and ballerinas, the other likes Spongebob and Elmo. One likes to take a nap, the other makes sure that doesn't happen! But the biggest problem I didn't think about is that they fight...ALL THE TIME! I don't even want to think about what it will be like with two TEENAGE girls! I have read probably hundreds of articles and books about sibling rivalry and tried method after method after method! Nothing seems to be helping. So now I'm stuck. What do I do at this point? How can I get them to respect each other, play nicely together, and compromise more often? I know I'm not the only mom in the world with two kids who don't get along. What do other moms do in this situation? I'd like to hear more opinions and any advice from other moms with kids close in age. If your kids don't have these problems, or did at one point but you got it handled, how did you do it? I would love to know the secret of success in overcoming sibling rivalry! |
